On November 26, McCarthy assisted in leading the Wolverines into an unbeaten game against Ohio State. In the 45–23 triumph, he passed for 263 yards, three passing touchdowns, and one rushing touchdown.

In the 51–45 loss against TCU in the College Football Playoff Semifinals, he completed 20 of 34 passes for a career-high 343 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions both of which were recovered for touchdowns in the Fiesta Bowl.

He finished 2022 with a 155.0 quarterback rating after completing 208 of 322 passes for 2,719 yards, 22 touchdowns, and five interceptions.

McCarthy had his greatest passing game of the season at home on September 2, 2023, against East Carolina (280 yards, three touchdowns).

McCarthy’s completion percentage of 86.7% (26 of 30) was the second-highest in program history, only surpassed by Elvis Grbac’s 90.9% (20 of 22) on September 14, 1991, against Notre Dame.

He completed 12 of 16 throws for 156 yards and two touchdowns on October 7 against Nebraska. After two passing touchdowns during the game, his 37 career touchdowns equaled Todd Collins for ninth place in program history.

Against Purdue on November 4, he completed 24 out of 37 throws for 335 yards. He moved up to eighth on the program’s all-time passing list with 335 passing yards in the contest, passing Tom Brady.

He completed 16 of 20 throws for 148 yards and a touchdown on November 25 against Ohio State. He moved up to eighth on the program’s all-time passing list after the game with 148 passing yards, surpassing Shea Patterson.

He was awarded the Offensive Most Valuable Player of the game on January 1, 2024, after completing 17 of 27 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns in a 27–20 overtime victory against Alabama in the Rose Bowl.
